What is Life Skills?

According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), life skills or life skills are abilities for Adaptive and positive behaviour that makes a person can complete everyday needs and challenges effectively. That definition is according to the World Health Organization (WHO).


Here are some groups of skills including life skills according to UNICEF and UNESCO:

1. LEARNING TO KNOW: Cognitive abilities

a. Skills to Solve Problems and Make Decisions

  • Information gathering skills
  • The skills to evaluate the impact on the future of the decisions made at this time to myself and others
  • Skills determine an alternative solution to a problem
  • Skills do an analysis of the influence of values and attitudes of self motivation regarding others


b. Critical Thinking Skills (Critical Thinking)

  • Peer influence analyzing skills and media
  • The skills to analyze the attitudes, values, social norms, and beliefs; and the factors that influenced them
  • The skills of identifying relevant information and sources of information


2. LEARNING TO BE: Personal abilities

a. Skills to Enhance Internal Control Center

  • Confidence (self-esteem) and build skills confidence (confidence)
  • Self-conscious skills (self-awareness skills), including awareness of rights, influences, values, attitudes, strengths, and weaknesses
  • Skills determine goals (goal-setting skills)
  • Skills for self-evaluation, self-assessment, and self monitoring


b. Skills for Managing Feelings

  • Skills for managing anger (anger management)
  • Skills for managing complaints and anxiety
  • The skills to manage the loss, humiliation (abuse), and trauma


c. Skills for Managing Stress

  • Time management skills
  • Positive thinking skills
  • Mastering the techniques of relaxation


3. LEARNING TO LIVE TOGETHER: Interpersonal Abilities

a. Interpersonal Communication Skills

  • Verbal and nonverbal communication
  • Active listening skills
  • The skills of expressing perasaaan; provide feedback (without blaming) and receive feedback


b. Negotiation and Rejection Skills

  • Negotiation and conflict management
  • Skills being asertif
  • The skills decline


c. Empath Skills

  • The ability to listen to and understand other people's needs and circumstances and express their understanding.


d. Cooperation and Group Work

  • The skills to express recognition of the contributions of others and different styles.
  • Skills for assessing the ability of self and contribute to the Group


e. Advocacy Skills

  • Skills to influence others (influence) and persuasion
  • Building a network of skills and motivate others
